Things to Consider when buying a Lawn Mower
It doesn’t matter whether you’re a new homeowner or are just looking to replace your old lawnmower, it is extremely important to know what to take into consideration when choosing a lawn mower. The designs and features of lawn mowers have developed over the years and have become a lot more sophisticated. Choosing the correct machine for the work that needs to be carried out can make your job a lot easier and you might even enjoy it.
Basic Types of Mowers
Basically you get two types of lawnmowers, rotary mowers and cylinder mowers. Rotary lawnmowers are either petrol-powered or electric powered and come in a variety of models such as push behind lawn mowers,self propelled lawnmowers, ride-on lawn tractors and the new robotic electric lawn mowers. The cylinder mowers are great for that perfectly manicured lawn, they have a cylinder with blades that cut like a pair of scissors would. These come in various models such as the cheaper manual push mower, the domestic electric cylinder mower and the commercial greens mowers which are usually self propelled. The most important decision in selecting the correct lawnmower is to match the mower with the type of lawn and finish you want.
Lawn Considerations
The next thing you need to consider is the size of the lawn you will be cutting.
- If your garden is classified as a small garden less than 300m2 then a small electrical push mower up to 1500W or manual cylinder push mower is ideal.
- If you have a medium sized garden up to 1500m2 then it is best to consider either an electric push mower up to 2500W or medium sized petrol push mower up to 3.5 HP.
- For large gardens up to 2000m2, an electric push mower with 2500W or more will be suitable, if you are looking for a petrol option then anything above 4 HP should be sufficient.
- For extra large and commercial properties above 2000m2 then it would be best to choose a heavy-duty machine, or ride-on lawn tractor
The other thing to consider is the lay of the land. Is the terrain flat, uneven or steep? Hover lawn mowers are better for sloped and irregular lawns as the mower will glide on top of the lawn and not dig in as with conventional mowers.
The final consideration is landscaping and obstacles. If you have numerous obstacles then choose a mower that is easy to maneuver.
Cuttings & Clippings
How you deal with the clippings needs to be considered when deciding on what type of lawn mower to buy. Basically you will need to decide whether you wish to mulch or bag the cut grass. If you decide you want to bag the clippings then it is best to choose a mower that comes with a grass box otherwise you need to choose a mulching mower that cuts the grass clippings into smaller pieces.
