Many are hesitant to install a pool because they are unsure about how to properly care for it. This is understandable - there is certainly no shortage of horror stories when it comes to pool care and faulty swimming pool pumps.

Rest assured, however, that many households have found that in-ground pools are much less of a hassle than they originally expected. There are a few simple steps to follow that will ensure that your pool is more of a pleasure than a pain. These include:

  • Only cover your pool if it is completely necessary. If you live in an area where the climate is relatively moderate all year round (no frost/snow), you can then get away without investing in a costly pool cover that has to be replaced every few years. This will also save you the hassle and cost of re-opening the pool at the beginning of every swimming season. If you do choose to cover your pool, however, remember to make a point of removing the accumulated debris periodically during the winter months.
  • Clean your pool regularly. Whether you choose to do so manually or by running a good automatic pool cleaner is up to you, but do so at least once a day to keep your pool clean of bugs, leaves and debris. If your pool sits idle for too long you run the risk of a stubborn layer of algae developing.
  • Keep on top of your pool maintenance. This includes cleaning the filter trap and swimming pool pump weekly, keeping the chlorine reservoir full and ensuring that the water level does not get too high for the skimmer to be effective.
