With such a wide variety of outdoor- and indoor pots and plant containers available on the market, it can be easy to make a purchase based on aesthetics alone. However, if you wish to keep your container garden healthy, it is important to consider a few things before you invest in a planter.

When choosing pots and planters, ask yourself the following questions:
  • What type of plant do you need the container for? The size and fluid requirements of your chosen plant will determine how large the container needs to be, as well as the type of drainage necessary.
  • Where do you plan to place the pot? It is important to determine beforehand whether the pot you choose will be exposed to the sun for extended periods of time. Certain types of material, such as terracotta, are porous by nature and dry out very quickly when exposed to the elements. If you plan to place the pot in full sun it would be best to choose a non-porous material like synthetic resin, which stays cooler and retains moisture more effectively.
  • Will you be able to water your plants every day? If not, you may have to consider investing in a pot or planter that has a drip tray/reservoir that can be filled from the bottom, allowing the plant to soak up water as needed.
  • Will you need to move the pot around often? Are you prone to rearranging your patio often or are you planting a type of plant that will need to be moved in and out of shade or sunshine? If so, it is best that you steer clear of heavy and cumbersome planters - rather choose a lightweight material that will make the container easier to move when you need to.
